BISSELL's roots go back to 1876 when Anna and Melville Bissell owned a crockery shop in Grand Rapids Michigan, USA (BISSELL HQ is still there).
Mechanically minded Melville created a carpet sweeper machine in response to Anna's frustrations of sweeping up stubborn sawdust particles used to pack china in the store.
His ingenious design solved the problem. Soon everyone wanted the sweeper. The first BISSELL factory was built in 1883, in Grand Rapids.
On Melville's death, Anna Bissell took control of the expanding BISSELL business, becoming one of America's first female corporate CEOs.
BISSELL became steadily more successful through its commitment to research, innovative product development.
In the UK, BISSELL's presence spans 117 years since the first London store. Queen Victoria insisted that her palaces be BISSELLED every day!
With changing lifestyles, BISSELL products have changed too. Appliances that clean even better and save people more time have been developed. New designs, mechanisms and brushes evolved continuously in response to changing fashions, carpet fabrics, flooring materials.
BISSELL's multi-purpose formula and shampooer brought another new dimension to household cleaning during the 1950s. This revolutionary appliance considerably reduced the time and drudgery associated with carpet cleaning.
As living spaces have become ever smaller, BISSELL has introduced modern styled practical, lightweight cleaners with more advanced technology, improved performance and power, features, accessories.
During the 1960/70s, Bex-BISSELL was synonymous with carpet shampooing and sweepers.
In the 21st Century, no longer with the Bex moniker, BISSELL as market leader, is enjoying buoyant sales via high impact marketing initiatives in tandem with product innovation and extension.
So as you can see, at BISSELL when we say clean...WE MEAN CLEAN!
